Fishing For Marlin
Fishing for Marlin can be one of the most exciting experiences in angling, especially when they are large. The sight of a Marlin leaping out of the water in a cloud of silvery water is truly awe-inspiring. It is a moment that will stay with you forever.
In the Gulf Stream, Blue and White Fishing for Marlin are common in the spring through summer months. These fish are smaller than those in the central Pacific, but they are still an impressive catch at up to 500 lb.
ackling the Challenge: Gear and Equipment for Marlin Fishing
While the majority of marlin anglers target these massive gamefish with bait, some prefer to use lures. A quality billfish lure like a Lumo Sprocket or the old classic Ilander can produce an amazing strike. These lures are designed to run at a very fast rate and will pull line from even the largest of reels.
A simple, four-bait spread is often the best choice when fishing for white marlin. Small ballyhoo on circle hooks adorn the flat and long lines while Express or Hawaiian Eye lures on select ballyhoo with a chugger head or a horse are used on the short rigs and shotgun.
When a marlin strikes, the captain should ease up on the tension and let the lure free-fall. This will make it easier for the captain to tell if the marlin is merely playing around or eating. A good indicator of a bite is that the line will suddenly spool out at a speed so rapid that it cannot be stopped with your thumb. If this occurs, the captain can slowly increase the drag to set the hook.
